Hannibal | A Macabre Miracle
(SPOILERS: Hannibal (2013) & all 5 films and 4 novels in the Hannibal Lecter franchise)
This video will serve as a complete analysis of Bryan Fuller's 2013 television series Hannibal, beginning with a review of each of the five film adaptations of the four novels that feature Hannibal Lecter, followed by a breakdown of all three seasons, and ending with a conclusion where I outline the absolute sh*t show that was the conception of the source material, thus giving deeper context as to what the show was up against when it set out to translate it to the screen. Let's dig in...

(SPOILERS: True Detective (Seasons 1 & 2), Chinatown, L.A. (SPOILERS: Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad) So… how do I put this? When adhering to precedent, Better Call Saul is a show that shouldn’t logically exist. (CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of rape, sexual assault, suicide) The Leftovers is one of the most frustrating, incoherent, pretentious… yet alleviating, harmonious, emotionally resonant television series in history, which, despite being one of my absolute favorites, I am often hesitant to recommend, since for you it could be a life altering experience or an infuriating waste of time. (SPOILERS: MR. ROBOT, GOSSIP GIRL) Question for you writers out there: do you consider yourself a “Gardener” or “Architect”? Never has a show and a channel name been more aptly tied together. I understand your point about wanting to eat their cake and have it too regarding Will's two paths. Even though we do get some episodes where we are kept in the dark and Will seems like he has chosen a path. Even before I saw the what the flick review of the season 2 finale where Fuller was a guest. I don't think he was torn, and it's not like he has a split personality like Elliott in Mr Robot. It's Will ways of thinking that sort of allows him to almost live in two realities at once and he knows that as time goes by he will be forced to choose one reality. But he doesn't want to, him calling Hannibal telling him to run. I saw that as Wills way of desperately trying to create a third path. Having helped Jack realize that Hannibal is the man who simultaneously has been playing a sick game with Jack the FBI agent. Knowing it won't give him the absolute closure, but that the torment Hannibal has put him through as the ripper is finally at an end. At the same time Hannibal has truly come to appreciate Jack's company and friendship. He can't reveal himself during their chats the way he can with Will. But when wearing the "personsuit" I think Hannibal both respects and appreciates Jack as a man. As much as he can all things considered being who he is. He will kill Jack to escape getting caught, but knowing that Will has been playing him after he smells Freddie on Will. Hannibal does give Will the choice and I don't think he did that just for the sake of sparing Will to follow through on their plan to kill Jack. Willing to forgive Will the deception if Will had said yes to leaving and then reward him with Abigail. I think he didn't want to kill Jack, but that moment in time he wasn't going to not defend himself and come quietly. I think your observation of Will's ability almost being supernatural is spot on. There is a lot of this show that doesn't make factual sense if this was a regular crime show. From the way many victims are displayed. The angel killer somehow manages to do to himself what he did to his victims which would be impossible. Hannibals ability to almost appear and disappear like smoke when the script needs him to. Getting Gideon out of the hospital unnoticed, being able to do the display set up for Beverly by himself, the way he frames Chilton with Gideon and the cops on display in record time when two cops who went to get Chilton didn't report back after getting there, that should have sent a SWAT team to his home before Hannibal was done. Not to mention his ability to get Mirriam to truly believe the Ripper was Chilton. For those people that want a cop drama and can't accept that the show operates on dream logic this won't be for them. For those of us that can we get to experience a show that really lives up to your channel name.

There are so many unspoken, evocative meta- correlations that I get from the last few scenes...."God Bless America" with DeNiro's ending in the Deerhunter, as well as the final smile shot evoking the final scene of A Clockwork Orange..." _I was cured, all right_ ..."

Your analysis of shows is pretty poignant and spot on, and inspire rewatches. This one in particular. I haven't watched the show since it went off the air but it was always one of my favorites. You reminded me why! Thank you. If you see this, what happened with the Game of Thrones Rewrite wrap up? I never saw it on the patreon or here. I want to know where those threads ultimately land!

I watched manhunter because of this and I have to agree its very unintentionally hilarious. This guy is suppossed to be an amazing detective and strategist, yet when it comes to the final oonfronntation he yells "the killing has got to stop!", ignores his fellow officers telling him to wait for back up, and runs wildly into the windw - instantly passing out. That's why houses with big yards.

Hannibal's 2nd season was pretty remarkable, indeed.. right off the bat they created this atmosphere of an intensely intriguing chess game bet. 2 dark minds, it was so much fun watching new eps/week., building up to that jaw-dropping finale 🤭 the writing airtight, delivering a solid, 13-episode run that's simply *chef's kiss*

I must say, I like the book Hannibal, but I'm a big Renaissance Florence nerd, so that was my favourite part. Plus I liked the character of Pazzi. And I liked, that the book didn't have a happy end, even though Clarice is one of my favourite characters. The tv show Hannibal is my favourite adaption by far, everything was so very well done. Thank you for this great overview over the Hannibal universe. (And I guess we all agree, Hannibal Rising doesn't exist, right?)

I love _LOVE_ Bob Odenkirk's delivery of Jimmy's confession in court in the finale. The way he says it all suggests that what he considers his greatest crime of all was being the driver of Chuck's suicide. That's what really means the most to him. He considers it a crime of equal weight to all of his actual crimes, even though what he did technically wasn't a crime. The shot we get of the buzzing "Exit" sign as he bares his soul, harkening back to those we saw in Chicanery, is almost like Chuck is in the room with them, quietly proud of Jimmy for doing the right thing.
